How an EMOM works
You are given a minute and a job. Finish the job in forty seconds and you get twenty seconds off. Finish it in fifty-five and you get five. The work is fixed and the rest is what is left over, which is what makes an EMOM self-regulating in a way a fixed work/rest interval is not: as you tire, your rest shrinks, and you feel it immediately.
So the whole skill is picking the right amount of work. The target is a piece that takes roughly forty seconds at a steady pace. That leaves enough rest to repeat it ten times and enough work that the last few minutes are honest.
How to run it
- Pick one movement and a rep count you can finish in about forty seconds while fresh. Ten to fifteen reps of most bodyweight moves is the right neighbourhood.
- Warm up. An EMOM starts at full speed on the first bell, so arrive ready.
- Press start. At each cue you begin the reps; when you finish, you rest until the next one.
- If you miss a minute — the reps run past the bell twice in a row — the workload was too high. Stop, or drop the reps and carry on. Chasing a bell you cannot catch is how an EMOM turns into a mess.
Variations worth knowing
- Alternating EMOM. Odd minutes one movement, even minutes another — push in one, pull in the other, so each gets two minutes of recovery. The usual way to run a longer EMOM without wrecking one muscle group.
- E2MOM. Every two minutes. Set the interval to 120 seconds for work heavy enough that a minute is not enough to recover from.
- Ascending. Add a rep each minute until you miss the bell. Set a generous round count and let the work end the session.
Moves that suit a fixed rep target — countable, repeatable, and forgiving when you are tired:
EMOM against the alternatives
An EMOM fixes the work and lets the rest float. A HIIT interval fixes both. An AMRAP fixes neither and just runs a clock. Which one you want depends on whether you would rather be paced by the timer or by yourself — an EMOM is the one that argues back.
Frequently asked questions
- What does EMOM stand for?
- Every Minute On the Minute. You start a set piece of work at the top of each minute and rest for whatever time is left before the next one begins.
- How long should an EMOM be?
- Ten to twenty minutes is typical. Beyond twenty, most people are better served by alternating two movements so each gets a two-minute cycle.
- How many reps should I do in an EMOM?
- Enough to take about forty seconds while fresh, leaving roughly twenty seconds of rest. If you are still working when the next minute starts, it was too many.
- Can this timer do an E2MOM or E90?
- Yes. Set the work interval to 120 seconds for an E2MOM or 90 for an E90, leave rest at zero, and pick your round count.
- Is this EMOM timer free?
- Yes, with no signup and nothing to install — it runs in your browser and keeps the screen awake while it counts.
Other timers
- Tabata TimerTwenty seconds of work, ten seconds of rest, eight times. Four minutes. Press start — the timer calls every switch so you never look at the clock.
- HIIT TimerSet your work, your rest, and how many rounds. The timer calls every switch out loud so you can keep your eyes off the clock and on the round.
- AMRAP TimerOne clock, counting down. You pick a circuit and get through it as many times as you can before it runs out. Nothing to decide once it starts.
- Circuit Training TimerForty-five seconds at a station, fifteen to get to the next one, twelve stations. One clock runs the whole room.
- Boxing Round TimerThree minutes on, one minute between, twelve rounds — the championship clock. Change it to whatever your gym runs.
