How to do it

  1. Stand arm's length from a wall and place both hands on it at shoulder height.
  2. Step one foot back, keeping that leg straight and the heel pressed down.
  3. Bend your front knee and lean toward the wall until you feel the back calf stretch.
  4. Keep your back heel down and your toes pointing forward.
  5. Hold, then release slowly.

How to breathe

Breathe in to lengthen, then let the exhale carry you a little deeper. Never force it.

Common mistakes

  • Heels lifting off the floor. Sit your weight back into them; if they still lift, shorten the range or widen your stance.

  • Giving one side more time than the other. Count both, and match the looser side to the tighter one.
